This leaves us with a question as to how the "lived on Crank's Creek" part of the family legend (which continued that line as "in the Powell Valley in Virginia" got into the story. There were 2 Elijah Smiths in the 1805 Knox Co., tax list. This Elijah Smith is on a land record for property on the line between Claiborne Co., TN and Lee Co., VA in 1806.
