It wasn't until 1850 that the census takers were required to make a visit to each household they were enumerating. Prior to that, if they had a pretty good idea of who lived where, they were allowed to simply record them and some of them probably only visited households that they weren't sure about. Also prior to 1850 they didn't number the households. For purposes of this database I numbered them in the order they were recorded by the census takers. It is quite tempting to assume they were recorded in consecutive order so that you can tell who lived on either side of a particular person but that is not a safe assumption to make.
